Backwater Tourism
A decade earlier, the concept of backwater tourism was unheard of.
Now, backwater tourism is the `in' thing. A stage has come where
a visit to Kerala is considered incomplete unless it includes a
boat trip through its backwaters. .
The slow moving Kettuvallam splitting the serene backwaters
flanked by greenery provides an enchanting experience to any visitor.
The complex network of lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals fringing
the coast of Kerala forms the basis of a distinct regional lifestyle.
The placid backwaters and lagoons form the lifeline of the
people. They provide the vital link for the transport of goods,
people and produce, apart from being the source of drinking water
and other facilities. They are often the only link between remote
isolated villages and town pockets.
Alappuzha is the gateway for the backwaters of Kerala. It attracts
several thousand tourists each year. Alappuzha is also famous
for its boat races, houseboat holidays, marine products and coir
industry. For the most intensive backwater experience, the regular
ferry from Quilon to Allepey is a rigorous ride, lasting about nine
hours.
One could get a full range of lives and activities, and some of
the finest visual imageries possible. From Alappuzha it is possible
to take cruises in many directions. During August-September period,
spectacular races of magnificent boats take to water.
