Food & People
People
THE PEOPLE of Kerala are a literary and lively lot, combining a
strong sense of tradition and religious conservatism with an enthusiasm
for experimentation with exceedingly progressive, political and
social movements.
Along with political and social sophistication, religion plays an
important part in the lives of most Keralites. The population is
divided between Hindus, Christians and Muslims, with a sprinkling
of Jewish and Anglo-Indian community.
Food
Kerala cuisine is light, fresh, lovely to look and easy to eat.
The bases are rice, coconut and vegetables, apart from fish. Like
most places in India, food is traditionally eaten by the hand and
served on a banana leaf.
Another interesting feature is the abundant use of coconut oil,
chilli, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and coconut milk.
Dress
The traditional dress forms are the 'Mundu and Neriathu' (a white
piece of cloth with golden jerried border symbolising royalty) for
men; and 'sari' ( a 5-6 metre long piece of cloth embroidered with
golden border) with jacket for women.
With the changing trends in fashion and designing, the dress codes
have changed. A multitude of colours and designs are available today.
Men and Women today are clad in a variety of dresses.
