Kerala's
exotic appeal is centered in the highland area of the Western
Ghats. Amongst the most popular hill stations of Kerala
are Munnar, Ponmudi, Idukki, Peermade, Devikulam, and Wayand.
MUNNAR:
Location:About 190 km from Cochin
International Airport.
The nature-lover’s paradise. Snuggling in the green
and serene Kannan Devan Hills, lies the quite and restful
resort of Munnar, at an altitude of 1524 m and 136 km off
Cochin.It is famous for its lush green surroundings, lakes,
reservoirs, forests, and tea estates. The quiet environs
of Munnar attract the traveler to relax in the lap of Mother
Nature. Munnar also beacons the adventure-seeking traveler,
who is interested in paragliding. It has some of the highest
tea estates in the world.
Panoramic views of low-flying clouds and mist filled valleys
make it a pretty little heaven with a cool bracing climate.
It was opened up out of virgin forests a century ago by
pioneering planters.
The Kundale Tea Plantation - An area surrounding a lovely
lake that offers some of the most stunning views of the
region. It offers the best opportunity you are ever likely
to have to see the tea plantations, to watch tea being picked,
to learn how tea is processed, to smell the sweet scent
of tea wafting through the air and to buy the tea directly
from the gardens.
PONMUDI:
Location: About 61 km from Thiruvananthapuram city,south
Kerala.
Situated at an attitude of 915 m above sea level, Ponmudi
is a beautiful hill station known for its pleasant climate,
tea plantations and enchanting scenery in Thiruvananthapuram.
The deep forest trails are ideal for hiking and trekking.
IDUKKI:
Idukki is one of the popular hill stations of Kerala. Idukki
is the land of majestic mountains, wondrous valleys and
spectacular streams. The mountains of Idukki are the starting
point of the River Pamba. The small hill town of Idukki
derives its name from the Malayalam word Idukku that literally
means 'a narrow gorge'. Idukki lives true to its name and
the Periyar River has the hills of Kuravan and Kurathi on
its sides forming a gorge. The mist clad hillocks of the
hill resort of Idukki work magic. Idukki offers forests
rich in teak wood, rose wood and sandalwood.
PEERUMADE:Location:About
40 km from Kumily,Idukki district, central Kerala.
Peerumedu is a small hill station
on the way to Thekkady. It is an ideal stopover on the way
to Thekkady. Surrounded by rolling hills and valleys, Peerumed
is well known for its waterfalls, open grasslands and delightful
trekking trails. It is a fertile land at an altitude of
914 meters. Formerly the summer palaces of Travancore Rajas,
this tiny and cool hill station is full of rubber, tea,
coffee, pepper and cardamom plantation, interspersed with
waterfalls and open grass lands.
DEVIKULAM:
Earlier an old rubber plantation, Kumarakom was developed
The hill station of Devikulam is located in the Indian state
of Kerala. Devikulam has gorgeous green slopes that are
as high as if to touch the sky. Lovely large lawns, rare
fauna and flora and the cool breezes in Devikulam are not
just refreshing but rejuvenating to the souls. Devikulam
literally means "the pond or lake of the Devi".
As per the beliefs of the people Goddess Sita had bathed
in the waters of the lake in Devikulam.
WAYANAD:
Wayanad is one of the hill stations of Kerala that has been
able to retain its pristine nature. Hidden away in the hills
of Wayanad are some of the oldest tribes, as yet untouched
by civilisation. Wayanad is known for picturesque mist-clad
hills, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and
rich cultural traditions.
Luxuriant plantations of coffee, tea, cardamom, pepper and
rubber, stretch over the hills of Wayanad as far as the
eye can see.
With the fast-flowing rivers - Panamaram, Mananthavady and
Kabini - cutting across the undulating panorama and lending
a picture-postcard look to the whole region - the north
eastern tip of Kerala.
