IF IT was through violence and bloodshed that the Islamic ideology had descended down to North India, with the coming in of Mahmud of Ghazni, it was through peaceful means that the Islamic faith disseminated in Kerala.

Its glory can be traced to the days of Cheraman Perumal, through an anecdote. According to that an Islamic youth saves the life of a Hindu girl of the royal family by rescuing her from being drowned in a stream. Thereafter she is separated from the family based on superstitions and she decides to live with him.

Thus the lineage based on her, was referred to as the Arakkal family and her family of descent as the Chirakkal family. Later the two families continued to live in harmony.
