Tripunithura Hill Palace
Tripunithura Hill Palace was the location of the popular Malayalam movie, ‘Manichitrathazhu’. Originally constructed in 1865 by the Kochi Maharaja as the office of the administrative affairs, the palace was later converted to a museum and opened its doors to the public in the year 1986. Around Rs.10 to Rs.25 is generally charged as entrance fee.
Visitors to the museum can start their trip by exploring the areas in the museum precincts, the Deer Park being one of them. There is also a dense jungle behind the palace which is rich in medicinal herbs and can be visited at any time. The museum itself has some restrictions on the timings and is home to almost fourteen categories of artistic displays. There is also a grave of Pareekshith Thampuran near the museum.
The Tripunithura Hill Palace occupies 54 acres of land and has 44 other buildings. Its oldest building is the traditional ‘Ettukettu’ which was built in the year 1850. The roof of most of the palace has been done using Mangalore tiles of offe
r protection in a heavy downpour. The fort at the center has one floor on top and an antique stairway leading to it. There is also a pond nearby the palace which may have been used by the staff in the palace during the earlier days.
In the recent times the Tripunithura Hill Palace has undergone a huge renovation process that cost the government approximately Rs. 7.5 crores. The renovation process commenced in December of 2009 and had a team of renovation workers and masons working jointly under the guidance of the Archaeology department of Kerala. The renovated Tripunithura Hill Palace reopened in July of 2010 and the government had planned a second phase of restoration activities to the heritage site of Kerala.
