Nelliyampathy hills: A hill-station caressed by clouds
Nelliyampathy hills are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala. Tucked away safely amongst myriads of coffee plantations and tea estates, Nelliyampathy is a quick getaway to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The ranges of Nelliyampathy are as tall as 1500m and offer a breathtaking view of the village below.
To reach Nelliyampathy, one has to start from Nemmara, which is a Palakkad village falling on the Thrissur-Pollachi stretch. Nemmara is popular for its annual ‘Vela Festival’. Since Nemmara itself is worth a look around, while here, one might as well check out its famous temples such as the ‘Mannathu Muthi Temple’ and the 'Navaneetha Krishna Temple’. Especially during the winters, the Kalchadi falls is a beauty to feast one’s eyes upon.
From Nemmara, Nelliyampathy is located at a distance of close to 26km where one of the towns in the place, Kaikatty, is located. The town offers many places to see, Kesavanpara, Seethakundu and Manalaroo estates among these. Kaikatty provides the tourists with guest house facilities. To shuttle between the hill station and the town, one has to rely on the service of the jeeps. The Pothundi dam comes next and from the dam, the road to Nelliyampathy hill station begins amidst the twist and turns of the tricky route uphill.
On the route up, one can see many private owned resorts and hotels. The main attractions are the bio-farms in the area and a British mansion now converted into a resort.
The journey to Nelliyampathy itself is a memorable one, with the vegetation in the area teeming with wildlife and waterfalls. Monkeys, porcupines and deer can be seen in plenty. The hills have almost ninety different species of butterflies alone. Over 200 species of birds are found in Nelliyampathy- Woodpeckers, Thrushes, Hornbills and Grassbirds included.
Astounding view of the Palakkad gap below can be seen from Nelliyampathy hills, and the flora and fauna of the place together make it a great spot to hang around with your group and blend in with nature.
