Low cost organic villas in Moozhikulam organic campus

Building organic villas had been the dream of T.R. Premkumar for a while when he started working on the project. The string of villas on his organic campus has not been constructed with an objective to bring in profit. Instead Premkumar hopes that someday the younger generation of environment-conscious Malayalees will acknowledge his contributions to the green community.

The organic villas are located in the Moozhikulam organic campus by the banks of the picturesque Chalakkudi River. Almost 2 acres hosting 50 villas have been set aside for the project. Even the villas are green-friendly and utilize only organic components for the major part. There are two styles for the villas- they could be a traditional mansion to house a family or they could be a one bedroom home for bachelors or newly weds.

The houses are not painted because Premkumar understands that unpainted houses help to keep the interior temperature stable. Burnt bricks are usually used for the construction with a layer of cement in between to hold the bricks together. The roof is constructed in the traditional manner using clay tiles.

Premkumar’s square-shaped villas are well ventilated; the cupboards and shelves all use ferrocement which helps bring down the construction costs. The kitchen and bathroom are decorated in a contemporary manner and the villas even come with their own sit-outs!

The total cost of the villas and the plot add up to Rs. 15 lakhs for the big houses and 3 lakhs for the one bedroom houses. The smaller houses have an added advantage that they come with a river view of the scenic Chalakkudi River.

Besides making the villas green friendly, Premkumar also coaches the residents on adopting an environment friendly lifestyle. Staying away from chemicals in the food, using wooden spoons and earthen vessels for cooking are some of the subjects taught to the residents.

Most of the villas in the campus have been sold or rented out by the owners. The single room accommodations are usually provided on a homestay basis to tourists on a quick getaway.
