Unnikrishnan
was born in Pallichal, in Thiruvananthapuram district, on January
7, as the seventh son of Velayudhan Pillai, a Government servant
and Padmavathy Amma, a cousin of Divan of Travancore, Neyyatinkara
Vadakkekotta Thanupillai.
After
completing his studies from the Government schools of Nemom and
Karamana, he joined for pre-degree in Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram.
He then took graduation in Geology from the famed University College,
Thiruvananthapuram.
The
endeavour continued and now he has to his credit, two Masters and
a PhD. He is also well versed in German and French.
Currently,
he is working as the senior advisor (senior project officer) to
Queensland Government. Earlier, he worked in National Parks and
Wildlife service, Australian wildlife dept etc.
An
extensive traveler, he has been to almost 90 per cent of the area
of Australia, a rare feat even by Australian standards.
