PROFILE
SIBI
George, the suave and soft-spoken first secretary of the Indian
embassy in Doha, who looks after labour welfare, consular services
and community affairs, is a multifaceted and dynamic personality.
His
charming behaviour and diplomatic ways becomes evident the moment
one steps in to his office. The booming drawl May I help you,
please greets the visitors there. That is Sibi George, an
Indian Foreign Service Officer, of 1993 batch, who has worked his
way in to the hearts of more than 1,50,000 Indians in Qatar with
his pleasing personality, sincere service and commitment to the
cause of labour welfare.
Sibi
played a pivotal role in making the Indian embassy in Doha, a true
peoples embassy. He finds happiness in extending a helping
hand to compatriots and was always successful in his endeavours.
He attributes his success to the cooperation of local administration
and the dedication of his team.
Practically
every day, he hogs the newspaper headlines for his active involvement
in the socio-cultural activities of Indian Community and for leading
all sorts of humanitarian drives to support Indians in Qatar, and
back home in India.
His
efforts aimed at wiping the tears of the unfortunate Indian workers
and the unending enthusiasm to promote welfare measures prompted
the Non Resident Keralites Affairs Department in Kerala to send
a letter of appreciation to Indian embassy in Qatar describing it
as a mission with a vision and a model mission.
Sibi
George believes in Gandhijis talisman. "If you have any
difficulty at any point of time in your life to take decisions,
recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may
have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going
to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Always consider
the plight of the poorest of the poor and take your decisions in
their favour. You will always be correct."
With
this uncompromising attitude in getting justice to the Indian workforce
in Qatar, for most employers in Qatar, Sibi is a figure that evokes
fear, literally, and a guardian angel for the labourers. During
his three-year tenure in Qatar, he has taken up cudgels on behalf
of a number of aggrieved Indian workers and helped them get justice.
Sibi
was very actively involved in the social life of Qatar. He had always
found time to attend the socio-cultural activities of his fellow
citizens and supported them by all possible ways and means.
He is also the chief coordinator of the Indian Community Benevolent
Fund (ICBF), a forum working under the Indian embassy to help the
Indians. Sibi made it a point to give assistance to the maximum
number of people and during the last three years, the forum has
spent a great amount of time and money to help Indians in Qatar.
The
legal committee set up by ICBF is involved in protecting the legal
rights and privileges of Indians. The legal cell also provides free
legal advice and guidance to Indians apart from educating them on
their duties and responsibilities as well as their dues.
