Oommen Chandy

Profile:

Born to K.O Chandy and Baby Chandy on 31 October 1943 in Kumarakom, Chandy had a humble upbringing. He studied at St George High School, Puthuppally and at CMS College and S B College, Changanassery, before taking a degree from the Ernakulam Law College. His interest in politics was eminent even in his early years in college. Chandy started his political career through the Kerala Students’ Union, where he served as president from 1967 to 1969. Though he was a member of the congress party since the 1960s, his election as the president of the State Youth Congress in 1970 was his stepping stone into the congress party in the real sense. He has been in active politics for over three decades since then.

A States man:
After Mr. Karunakaran and Mr. A.K Antony, Sri Oomen Chandy is considered to be the third most powerful leader in the Kerala Congress Party. He was an obvious choice for the Chief Minister’s post after A.K Antony expressed his willingness to quit. Reputed as an organizational man, Chandy is a dear to all party members for his simple life-style and unsullied reputation. The fact that he has been contesting and winning from his home constituency, Puthupally, unfailingly since 1970 is an eloquent testimony of his popularity and acceptance by all sections. His elevation to the post of the Chief Minister is a turning point in the history of Kerala Congress politics which had been till now dominated by Karunakaran and A.K. Antony.
A trouble shooter and a longtime associate of A.K. Antony, Oomen Chandy has handled almost all major portfolios, including Home and Finance ministry. He has taken pivotal role in solving internal party problems and has fought many a factional battle for his party- skillfully handling miscreants inside and outside the party. In 1991 he was made Convener of the UDF government and he had been trusted with the same responsibility since then. He is also associated with many labour unions of the state.
From a student activist to the chief minister, it has been a long journey for Ooman Chandy. The state hopes to tackle the fragile economy, crippled by the consecutive drought and flood, and to attain higher educational and financial heights under his able leadership.
