Life and Career

Lekha Sreenivasan, the wife of TP Sreenivasan, India’s current ambassador to Austria, is an accomplished Bharat Natyam dancer, a self taught painter, a reiki master, and above all an ambassador of compassion to many.

Born to Mele Vadakkedath Raman Kutty Nair and Vanaja Nair, she had most of her education from Trivandrum, where her parents are settled. It was while studying at Mar Ivanios, she met her future husband, TP Sreenivasan, who was working there as a lecturer. They got married in 1968.

Before embarking on her current mission, she used to teach at a primary school in New Delhi and also managed many conferences, including some prestigious UN conferences, again in Delhi.

Lekha’s position as an ambassadors wife automatically translates to a comfortable life. But, she took much pain, trouble and energy to help those who need help. For that she relied on her intrinsic abilities -the ability to dance, to paint and to organize charity shows.

Lekha says she leads a gypsy life and till date she has toured about 12 countries and has imbibed the positive elements from several cultures she came into touch with. Despite the hectic schedule, she makes it a point to visit Kerala at least once in a year. For her, ‘time is what you make’.

Lekha is trained in dance forms like Mohiniattam, Kathak, and Burmese dance. She has also trained children of several nationalities and choreographed many dance forms. She was the leader of the Indian Delegation to the Second Continental Women’s Congress in Washington DC and performed twice at the United Nations. She has to her credit a thesis paper on “Indian Dance and Art”.

An accomplished oil painter, Lekha had exhibited her works in several countries and held one-woman shows in New York, Washington, Kenya and New Delhi.

Lekha is currently the chairperson of the World Malayalee Council. She was associated with WMC since its birth in New Jersey. In fact, she was one of the first Vice-Chairpersons of WMC.
