Dr Ekbal received his medical degree in 1971, his general surgery
degree in 1980, and his Neurosurgery degree in 1982.
Dr
Ekbal has demonstrated broad intellectual interests and achievements
throughout his career. From 1993 to 2000, he was Professor and Chair
of Neurosurgery at the Medical College in Kottayam, Kerala, one
of the outstanding hospitals in the state.
Dr.
Ekbal is an active member of the Kerala People's Science Movement,
an organization dedicated to popularize science, raising environmental
awareness, and making medicine patient-oriented, inexpensive, and
available to all. He has participated in several national and international
conferences on democratic health practices including most recently
the International Health Assembly, held in Dakka, Bangladesh.
His
talks on various subjects have attracted international attention.
Interested
in sharing thoughts about the effects of globalization on medicine
and medical care in the Third World, Dr. Ekbal seeks dialogue with
US physicians, health administrators and health activists. He wishes
to make decentralization of health services an effective means of
making life better for the people of Kerala and for people everywhere.
Dr.
Ekbal is also an active member of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad
from 1973 onwards. He served as the President of the organisation
from1983 to 1985. He is also associated with national and international
organisations like 'International People's Health Council (Nicaragua)','Consumers
International (Malaysia)', Health Action International (Netherlands).
Dr Ekbal has also participated in prominent national and international
conferences.

Dr Ekbal has authored several books and articles on health in English
and Malayalam.

Dr.
B Ekbal is a noted health activist and neurosurgeon. He has done
research works including,
Health Status of Kerala,
Advent of Modern Medicine in Kerala,
Incidence of Neurological Disorders in the Community,
Cervical Spinal Lesions in Head Load Workers in Kerala
In
addition to this, he has authored several books on Health and Information
Technology and has published articles in leading Journals in Malayalam
and English. He is in the editorial boards of journals including
'Radical Journal of Health (Bombay), Bodhi (Calcutta), Medical Lobby
for Appropriate Marketing News Letter (Australia).
His
professional experience includes lectureship in Anatomy and Pathology
at Medical College, Kottayam and as Faculty Member of Dept. of Neurosurgery
in Medical Colleges in Kottayam, Trivandrum, and Kozhikode. He also
served as the Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, Medical College,
Kottayam.
