The Mitsubishi companies, or the Mitsubishi Group of Companies or the Mitsubishi Group is a large group (keiretsu) of independently operated Japanese companies which share the Mitsubishi brand name. While the companies are autonomous, they share the brand name and trademark, as well as a common legacy (in general these companies all descend from the zaibatsu of the same name).

The Mitsubishi group of companies form a loose entity, the Mitsubishi Keiretsu, which is often referenced in US and Japanese media and official reports. A keiretsu is a common feature of Japanese corporate governance and refers to a collaborative group of integrated companies with extensive share crossholdings, personell swaps and strategic co-operation. The top 29 companies are also members of the Mitsubishi Kinyokai, or (Friday Club), and meet monthly. The Mitsubishi.Com Committee is charged with maintaining the overall integrity of the brand as well as maintaining the portal web site.

CEDIA (Petrol)

HINDUSTAN Motors has launched the new Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia, a new version of the Lancer that will replace the current model.

The Lancer Cedia is being launched with two variants, including the Cedia Sports, and the car will be priced at about Rs 9.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Unveiling the new car, Mr Ravi Santhanam, Managing Director of Hindustan Motors, said the Lancer Cedia is a premium car that has evolved from the legendary Evo Series of Mitsubishi. The new Cedia is more muscularly built and though it continues to be in the same size class, the car is expected to be easier to handle and at the same time offers much more power on demand for the driver.

The Cedia features a two-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that offers a peak power of 115 PS and a maximum torque of 175 Nm. The car's top speed is 180 kmph and safety features include dual air bags with an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. The car also features multi-link independent suspension and a five speed manual gearbox.

Mr Santhanam said that in addition to the Cedia, the company is also looking at other Mitsubishi products for a possible India launch. The very next Mitsubishi product could well be the Montero sports utility vehicle, which HM is planning to introduce within the next six months. The new generation, Bharat Stage III version of the Pajero would also be launched soon, he said. The company is also exploring the possibility of exporting components from India to technology partner Mitsubishi.

LANCER

Lancer in India is manufactured at the Hindustan Motors Plant at Chennai, a state-of-the -art facility, with an investment of over Rs.300 crores, set up in Technical collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Japan. The manufacturing process at the plant involves three vital stages: Body Shop, Painting and Assembly Line.

In the 'Body Shop' Jigs are supplied by Mitsubishi Motors, Japan. Microprocessor controlled weld guns are from Obara, Japan and key equipment are from Lincoln Electric.

The 'Paint Shop', designed and executed by Taikisha, Japan, has an Automatic Conveyor system supplied by Daifuku, Japan, and is capable of Metallic, Pearl finishes. This facility has a flexibility of operation to offer as many as 11 colours on select occations.

In the 'Assembly Line', PLC Controlled Conveyor and Hoists have been installed by Daifuku, Japan. Pre-set pneumatic tools are from Uryu, Japan.

PAJERO

The Pajero features an indirect injection engine which is fast becoming an extinct species in the world of oil burners. But the precombustion cycle ensures that the 2835cc four pot unit is quieter than the DI unit powering the new Pajero - at idle, and when revved hard. This motor produces a rocking 118 bhp @ 4000rpm and 29.8kgm of torque @ 2000rpm. This behemoth of a vehicle, reaches 60kmph in 6.42sec and the speedo eventually touches 100kmph in 16.85sec. The Pajero 2.8 comes with 15'' steel wheels in place of 16'' ones commonly found on SUV's. The smaller wheels affect the stance a little and reduce the ground clearnace several notches. The Pajero features a part time 4WD system, with a super select 4WD unit offering 4 traction modes. The part time 4WD system is easy to use - just stop to change over from rear wheel drive to 4WD and back, while the super select unit has an electronically controlled transfer case that allows the driver to shift on the move. But the toast of the package comes in the form of lockable differentials and a torque sensing limited slip differential that separate the Pajero from wannabe 4x4's. With the centre differential locked and the selector in 4LLc setup, a 40degree inclination can be tackled with ease and aplomb.
