The state today boasts of a road density four times the average density of India, with Kochi alone contributing to a lion’s share of the traffic. And it is not just an economy car which the Keralite has taken a fancy to. A plethora of BMWs, Mercs and Audis too adorn the streets and highways of this small state.
Being the tourism capital of India attracts visitors to Kerala from all over the world and in reply to a rising demand cab services and car rentals have mushroomed in various corners of Kerala. Toyota, Skoda, Mahindra, Tata and Chevrolet have entered the cab service industry with a vengeance putting the old Ambassadors and 800s out of business.
Owning a car is no longer a luxury for the average Keralite. In fact it is not even a convenience factor any longer. To own a car has become a necessity today, just as owning a television, refrigerator or mobile phone. And what are the favorites of the ‘white collar’ household? Maruti, without a doubt tops the list with its numerous models, but Hyundai is close behind and gaining very fast.
Today, the only (if at all any) problem facing Kerala’s car owner is the dearth of good roads. Roads in Kerala have long deteriorated and are no longer able to sustain the heavy density of the traffic on it. If the Government’s recent initiatives for the expansion of roads and national highways bear fruit then may be the concerns of the regular car owner will stand alleviated.
