Fourth Estate stinks?
Looking back, we wonder how we missed the signs 'oh-so-obvious'. Most of us would have realized it; only we too were caught up in the rush of the moment. As the most 'respected' media in the country lined up outside the gates of the Bachchan residence for two consecutive days and sacrificed their precious peak hours to deliver the latest updates of the Aish-Abhi wedding, we should have seen it coming. The death of the Journalist had occurred.
And now with the recent 2G developments that put the media to “shame”, it looks like the funeral procession is happening in full swing. The protector of the weak, the upholder of the righteous, the one and only Barkha-Ms.Dutt being exposed for the "pay-per-view" reporter she actually is; the "let-me-put-it-this-way" India's pride, Mr. Vir Sanghvi being asked to step down, and so on and so forth. If we feel that Radia-Burkha-Tata tapes have "shocked" and shaken us to the very core, we must think again. Because, who are we kidding? We knew this was happening. We always knew that the media is not anymore what it once used to be.
So, is there such a thing as 'credible' journalism anymore? We think not. The myth of the journalist who fights selflessly for the human rights of the hapless citizen is a thing of the past. Entertainment is the new News. For those of us intellectuals who cannot digest this fact, when was the last time you switched over to DD News? So let us not get into the 'blame it on the media' mode. We as viewers are equally responsible for the pathetic state of affairs in the country because: after all, the media is only putting on our tables, the news that we want to see. In a country which is anyways going to the dogs, the question of whether it was a ‘credible or manipulated’ downfall becomes totally immaterial.
