A holiday home out of your vacant house, Part 2: Decorating the bedroom

Now that you have furnished the living room of your holiday home, it is time decorate the bedroom. Bedroom is one of the most important areas of your holiday home as it is the area where the guests will be using to relax. For this matter, it is best to decorate the bedroom in your holiday home in a warm and comfortable manner. Let us see how we can accomplish this.

As a first step, you need to divide your bedroom into zones; let’s say the ‘reading zone’, the ‘dressing zone’ and the ‘sleeping zone’. If your bedroom is too small to accommodate two zones, you can combine the reading and sleeping zones. We’ll come to this in a minute.

For the dressing zone, you need to avail a dressing table or a full length mirror with a side table to place the cosmetics.

If your bedroom comes with a good view covering an open lawn or a water body, then it is best to arrange your reading desk and chair so that the person seated can look over his desk and into the view. If the room is too small for a separate reading zone, then place a small desk with a shelf (about the height of your bed) near the side of the bed which is closest to the bed lamp. The shelf is intended to accommodate books and the desk can be used to place reading glasses and probably a notepad.

And about the bed? Well, make it a double-cot in most cases and king-size bed for really large bedrooms. And ensure that a good quality soft but firm mattress is complimented by a light colored bed sheet, an assortment of contrasting large to small fluffy pillows and also a blanket that matches the over all color scheme!

Curtains should be lightweight and on a panel that allows overlapping of up to 4” since the guests may need the room to be completely dark for an afternoon nap. For a large room, go with dark curtains that fare well with the upholstery on the bed and chairs. For a small room, choose light colored curtains that blend with the wall color.

If there is a porch facing a good view, place two lawn chairs and a coffee table in it so that the guests may view themselves for say, a sunset. In any case, provide a couple of additional chairs in the room or even a small couch, if the bedroom is big enough.

For the humid climate of Kerala, it is best to avoid carpets which are fixed to the floor. Wall to wall carpeting is also not advisable except in places such as Munnar which have a colder climate for a good length of the year.

Last but not the least, stick to a color theme here too; but you may adopt a different theme from the one in the living room. Grey and orange is a one such theme. Arrange pictures on the wall, preferably of natural sceneries and don’t forget to balance them out as we did in the living room.
