In the backdrop of the heavy monsoon harvest in Central Kerala region, the water levels rose near the maximum capacity of most of the reservoirs, a part of the Idukki power project. In Idukki dam the water level is 2389.72 feet now which is around 85% of its maximum capacity. 2403 feet is calculated as the maximum capacity of the dam.

The Idukki dam where the biggest hydroelectric project of the state situated is one among the largest arch dams of Asia. The dam owned by KSEB, can produce 1817.50 million units of electricity from its current water level. The Moolamattam power house of the Idukki reservoir could not produce the expected electricity this time. The reservoir got around 332cm rain from March this year. This is not utilized well since the availability of rain was not in a consistent. In June it was the maximum of 77cm, in July the rain was less than that of the previous. The power produced from the other projects in the district was increased as a result of this.

The water level rise in the Idukki Dam depends upon the collection water from the Mullapperiyar dam through the spill ways. For this Mullapperiyar dam should posses a water level of 136 feet. Now it is only 118.5 feet. The water level also depends upon the monsoon rain of the forest areas of Kumali and Thekadi. Monsoon will help fill the small reservoirs in the district so as to collect more water in the Idukki dam. In the years 1981 and 1991 the water level of Idukki dam crossed a height of 2400 feet.

Other small reservoirs also are near their maximum water level. Last day Mattupetty marked 1597.10 feet water level, Anayirankal 1207 feet and Kundala 1758.70 feet. The authorities consider this as a positive sign to increase the power production by next year.
