Vizhinjam International Seaport soon to be a flagship

Vizhinjam International seaport will soon be the flagship port of all the harbors in the state. Plan to shift almost 20% of the cargo transfer through waterways is underway, said the Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, yesterday. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Kerala Ports Maritime Business Conclave, he projected the government’s proposal to launch a coastal shipping project by connecting the Vizhinjam, Kollam, Beypore and Azheekal ports.

The Chief Minister also reassured that the government is not ready to write off the Vizhinjam container transshipment terminal as its first phase infrastructure development programme that is already kicked off will be completed within 18 months. The Vizhinjam international Seaport Ltd will be turned to a flagship as soon as the project is accomplished.

Announcing the initiation of several security measures along the coastal lines, Minister of Ports V.Surendran Pillai termed the Vizhinjam Port as a highly prioritized prestigious project. The total budget of the three phased project will round upto Rs 6000 crore. As a landlord project, the government will construct the port infrastructure for Rs 1,637 crore and global bids are also invited for Rs 1,000 at the first phase.
