State Bank’s Unique Identification Number to be distributed in Kerala

The State Bank of India’s Unique Identification Number scheme takes off in Kerala with the bank distributing these identification numbers in January to the Keralites. The bank authorities, on the identification number scheme, state that it will take approximately two years to complete the distribution of the identification number to all its customers in India.

All the details of the account holders along with their thumb impressions will be collected by the bank against a particular identification number that will be unique for each customer. For most Government schemes such as ration card issuance, pension distribution and other welfare schemes, the bank’s identification number will serve as the base key against which registrations are made.

Once registered, it takes little more than two weeks to assign a unique identification number to the customer. Very few customers can be catered at a time for the issuance of the number since the process includes the collection of many details.

In states such as Karnataka, the process has kicked off well with almost 40,000 customers being issued the number. The process is also well under way in states such as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. In Kerala, the State Bank of Travancore will serve as the mediator since it has among others, the most number of branches and accounts in the state of Kerala. The State Bank of Travancore will now try to being its existing customers and prospective customers to be enrolled under the scheme.
