High court seeks ban on beggary
A state level ban on beggary was sought by the High Court of Kerala, yesterday. The court also sought the details of the ban to be intimated by the government of the state to all other courts in the state to check banning and rehabilitate the children living in the streets of Cochin.
The initiative was taken off in the wake of a petition filed to a bench consisting of Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Bhabani Ray. The petitioner also sought that the court direct the state government and the welfare department towards the rehabilitation the beggars with special attention on the children involved. No children in the above the age of 5 and below 15 should be employed by anyone and that they need to be schooled, the petition claims.
The bench instructed the Kochi police to take into custody run such children and take them under the wing of the rescue shelters organizations of the state. As of now, the beggars are sheltered in the Palluruthy relief center along in the company of drug users and people with infectious illnesses.
