Online ration card availed through Akshaya Centers in Kerala

Online ration cards may put an end to the never-ending list of formalities and struggles one has to encounter for getting a ration card. The new method is to apply online for a new or duplicate ration card, thanks to the ‘e-District Project’ of the State Government. This online project will take wing through the many Akshaya Centers in the state. Not only for applying new ration cards, but people can depend on this online method to make updations and corrections in their existing ration cards.

An applicant of the online ration card can register in an Akshaya center by submitting a certificate of proof with his application. A service charge of Rs.25 will be taken from the applicant of the online ration card. The applicant can then collect the ration card from Taluk Supply Offices after the approval of the application by the related authority which makes use of bar codes and other digitized information. But Akshaya Centers are claming an increase in the service charge to Rs.50 per applicant, to compensate for the entire expenses per online applicant, including photographs.

The e-District project is a concept of integrating all services, like the issuance of certificates for citizens through subordinate offices. The other short listed services are from PDS, Revenue, Police, Agriculture and Public Grievances like RTI, Election, Passport and Transport services.

The new online method will be implemented through Akshaya, Friends and Data centers of the state initially. Kannur and Palakkad are the pilot districts where the state will launch all e-district programs primarily. The facility for applying ration cards online is going to be launched in 140 Akshaya Centers of the Kannur district from this week.

The e-district project is supposed to reduce the time taken by the citizens for getting certificates and other services from the Government departments. Additionally, this will be useful to store data safely for further use.
