New AC and non AC buses to be introduced in Trivandrum and Kochi
20 new non AC buses and 10 AC buses will join KSRTC’s bus services shortly. The buses are a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru Mission for renovation of urban areas. The buses will cover the routes between the developing areas adjoining the city, to the main cities of Trivandrum and Cochin.
The Government has stressed on the introduction of the semi floored non AC buses since the low floor AC buses have not been able to accomplish a high passenger rate in the state capital. From the date of their launch which was on 17th November, these buses were able to fetch KSRTC only an amout of 2 crores which was just enough to cover the expenses. Kochi however has received a high rate of passengers for the AC buses.
The cost of a ticket in the non AC bus is Rupees 5 a kilometer and that of the AC bus is the exact double. KSRTC feels that if the cost of the AC buses is increased to Rupees 50 a km, some amount of profit can be gained.
The JNNURM AC and non AC buses differ from the other KSRTC not only by design but also certain core values that they adhere to, such as punctuality and courteousness. These qualities are expected to encourage more passengers from the neighborhood area to use the service.
