Kerala’s Migration Survey begins: Non Resident Malayalees under radar
Migration Survey of Kerala has begun its 6th assessment. The survey will monitor the migratory behavior of NoRKs and the monetary contributions made by non-resident Malayalees to Kerala. Approximately 15,000 houses will be grouped under the scope of the survey. The survey plans to cover the details of remittance, employment, education and other financial aspects which are relevant to the interest of the survey. Almost 300 areas in the state will be spanned by the surveyors.
The financial aid for the survey is shared amongst non resident Keralite department in the state and Kerala government. The CDS research wing of the overseas Indian affairs ministry will carry out the survey.
Earlier surveys by the Center for Development studies, Trivandrum had revealed that almost 22% of Keralites are NRIs, 90% of who are working in the Gulf region. It also discovered that the economic recession of the time has had no effect on the migration of Malayalees to the Arab countries, the numbers continuing to increase in spite of the slowdown.
Earlier on, CDS had submitted reports on the surveys it had conducted in 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008. The 6th edition of the survey is expected to conclude and publish the initial report by the latter half of 2011.
