The Nehru-Fulbright Education Exchange Program in the 60th year of its Indo US education partnership, substantiated the numerous benefits acquired by more than 15,000 Indian students in U.S since the year 1950. S.M Krishna, the External Affairs Minister of India one of the renowned people among those achievers.

The educational partnership program has been revised in the years 2008 and 2009 respectively. In 2008 India and the United states achieved a historic milestone when they signed an agreement making both countries the only partners in the governance and funding areas of the educational program. In 2009, the scholarship of the Fullbright Program was extended as a result of the dialogues between Dr. Manmohan Singh and U.S president Barak Obama. Today, the annual scholarship stands at $4.6 million USD. These changes were officially declared during the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of partnership hosted by the Indian Embassy, in Washington.

As per Sasikala Sriram, the Principal of the Chennai based school Bala Vidya Mandir who is a Fullbright Scholar; she was attracted by the educational practices in U.S. They give more emphasis on reading than lecturing and she has already shared the cooperative learning ideas of U.S, with the students and teachers of her school.

Education, being a key element in Indo-US partnership, President Obama also commented on the educational partnership between the two countries during his recent visit to India. As per Meera Shankar, India’s Ambassador to US, the program nurtured the educational cooperation between India and U.S even during times when there were no substantial political relations between the two. So it is expected that the Nehru Fullbright Educational Exchange Program can evolve to accommodate even more Indian students in the backdrop of the warm political relations between India and U.S.
