India bans reality shows: Big Boss and Rakhi Ka Insaaf under scanner
Indian bans reality shows during daytime hours, just as Baywatch glam doll Pamela Anderson walked into the sets of Big Boss. The restriction has been enforced after repeated complaints from the viewers about two controversial programmes appearing on television in India, namely, Big Boss and Rakhi Ka Insaaf.
The ban does not however include censoring the contents of the reality shows, instead the reality shows need to announce beforehand that the programme contains explicit content and is not suitable to be viewed by a younger crowd. The Indian public have allegedly been repeatedly requesting for the two shows to be moved into the night slot, which is 11 pm to 5 am. The requests began to flood ever since Veena Mallik of Big Boss fame ‘dropped’ her towel during Big Boss broadcast.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India stated that the participants of the reality shows have been cornered into creating sensational events in the reality show with the intent of increasing publicity and ratings. In the push for acquiring higher ratings, some of the reality series in India have ultimately resorted to broadcasting content which is considered explicit and questionable in the Indian society.
As an add on, the Ministry has also instructed Entertainment News channels to not telecast segments from such reality shows during the day slots. Such content is misleading and not appropriate for the young viewers, the ministry says.
