India ranks second in the number of students enrolled in US Universities
India ranks second with respect to the number of Indian students enrolled in the US universities. India follows the lead of the Chinese students who form 18% of the total foreign students in the US. The US has approximately 7 lakh foreign students studying in its schools and universities. Of these 15% or about a lakh students are from India.
Notably, there is no significant increase in the number of Indian students moving to the US for studies, on a yearly basis. The reverse is applicable too, since the number of US students coming to India for higher education have decreased by a whopping 15%. China however, reports a 2% growth in the number of Chinese students going to the US to pursue their studies.
Reports say that the US students now prefer moving to the UK for higher studies. Europe in general is a favored location, with Britain and Italy being the top two study destinations. India ranks 21st in the list of most preferred destination for students from the US and even this trend has shown a general decline.
The same is applicable to even the Indian students whose enrollments to the US universities have not shown a positive trend this year. Around 57000 visas were issued to Indian students by the UK this year as against an approximate 30,000 visas issued by the US. The reason behind this seems to be based on the fact that UK is closer to India in terms of the distance to be traveled. Additionally, UK universities also offer convenience in terms of the one year educational degrees that they provide.
Indian students studying abroad contribute about 13bn USD as revenue to the universities. The top enrolling countries China, India and Korea (South) constitute around 45% of the total enrollments received by the US on a global scale.
