First Biogas truck in New Zealand to hit the roads

A Biogas truck was launched in New Zealand on Thursday. The truck which runs on Biogas fuel extracted from the garbage heaps found in the western and coastal areas in New Zealand is the first of its kind in the country. Developed after a research period of 2 years, authorities feel that adopting a fuel of this kind has multi-faceted results. Not only does it clean the environment of the waste products, but it also has the potential to save up to 5.4 crore litres of diesel on a global scale. The truck is also designed to support both diesel and biogas engines.

The truck was developed by the engineering team at Redvale Energy Park. In New Zealand, amenities like electricity are also under production through methane gas collected from these areas. However, according to scientists, it is more useful to produce biogas from the waste products than electricity. For almost a decade Redvale has been in the process of producing methane, which was later used to generate electricity in close to 11000 homes. Biogas is a blend of carbon dioxide and methane which are liberated during the decomposition process of organic matter, including waste products.

Biogas has been discredited from its role in environment protection largely due to the fact that it is a greenhouse gas, which may damage the environment in many ways. Scientists at Redvale are of the opinion that once carefully tapped, biogas can go long way in resolving the fuel crisis globally, thus playing its significant role in the preservation of environment.
