Fake mobile phone connections thrive in Kerala, according to statistics. The mobile phone technology is in its full bloom with the entry of the latest 3G facility from the mobile phone services of India. 3G offers a magnificent world of new communication strategies. But what happens when it is misused thanks to the free SIM offers from the network providers is evident today. The advanced communication technologies are abused for anti social activities nowadays, and the cyber crimes are also in full swing.

The misuse of the mobile phone technology starts with a false connection. Some of the agents of the service providers misuse the proofs of identities and photographs of the authorized applicants for making fake identities for a mobile connection. The person would not be able to realize that there are so many other mobile phone connections in his identity until a crime occurs. On October 2008 a Malayali youth from Malappuram was accused in the Hyderabad and Bangalore blasts and shot dead by the Indian army in Kashmir. Later the Keralites realized the real terror behind fake mobile phone connections, as the military officials seized a mobile phone from him carrying an identity of an NRI Keralite from Malappuram. After that issue the Kerala police instructed all phone service providers, even the ones in the root level to be alert in giving connections and to never make fake connections, by misusing the identity proofs of other customers. But even after two years of the incident the misdeeds are on a rise.

The mobile phone networks in the country give a commission of Rupees 50 to 100 to an agent per connection. There are plenty of other gifts as compliments for the ones who achieve particular targets. This compels the agents to create false connections using the identities of authorized applicants. The ‘free SIM offers’ of many service providers opened a new window for this crime to bloom.

Kerala is now a hub for scores of fake mobile phone connections. Malappuram state alone crossed a thousand numbers in this regard, as Police seized many fake ids from some of the agents in the district..
