Endosulfan relief package not enough: Protestors ask the use of chemical to be completely stopped
Endosulfan relief package provided to the victims is not enough, say the protestors. The protestors demand a case to be filed against the Plantation Corporation of Kerala which is allegedly still using the chemical for its agricultural activities.
Chemical Endosulfan’s relief package has been endorsed by the Government, after what seemed like an eternity of wait for the victims. Approximately 480 families, who are victims of the chemical, have been planned to be covered by the package. A moratorium on the loans will be declared for the farmers in the chemical affected areas and special projects will be taken up to bring some relief to the loans that are pending with the farmers. The Government has also decided upon the construction of houses for the homeless in the 11 tragedy afflicted Panchayats and distribution of rice at Rupees 2 a Kg for those farmers suffering the tragedies of the chemical Endosulfan.
The controversial chemical Endosulfan had earlier been banned in the state following widespread protests from the victims of the chemical and their supporters. The Government had organized a meeting to discuss the ban wherein the Agricultural Ministry had refused to formally terminate the use of the chemical. The ministry claims that the chemical is still in use in the other states and therefore a ban cannot be called into order until a discussion with the other Indian states has been conducted.
A consortium of parties is expected to meet the Prime Minister later on, to request a country wide ban on the deadly chemical.
