Anti filariasis tablets to reach 8 lakh houses in Trivandrum City
More than 32 lakh people at the Trivandrum city will be administered with anti-filariasis drug today and tomorrow.19,000 health workers in the district will supply the drugs by visiting 8,82,779 houses as part of eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis in the community with the Mass Drug Administration programme.
A World Health Organization initiative, except pregnant women and infants less than 2 yrs, all others will be given a dose of diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) and Albendazole tablets. The programme will be continued for five consecutive years to globally eradicate filariasis within the year 2015.
Filariasis is caused by the disease- causing micro organism, microfilariae and is transmitted by the mosquito vector of Culex or Mansonia species. Almost 15% of the total filariasis infected cases come from Kerala. The low public health priority given in this regard is one of the major causes of this menace, claim the officials of the health department.
The DEC and Albendazole tablets are to be consumed only after food. They are completely safe. Any detection of mild fever after the tablet consumption indicates the destruction of the microfilaria in the body.
