New amenities for railway stations include parcel services and elevators. A Parcel service for the Eranakulam railways station and a lift for the Trivandrum station seem to be the agendas of Rajiv Sharma’s one year plan. The Divisional Manager of the Railways, he said that new facilities such as these will be introduced at the leading railway stations, both in Ernakulam and Trivandrum.

Almost Rupees 11 crores will be spent on new security measures at the railway stations. These include monitoring and control system to survey the crowd at each railway station. The systems will also help restrict the admittance of the crowd into the railway station platform. It will also help monitor and track crowd movements making it easy to detect and curb crime and terror at the stations.

If the inclusion of a new halt at Parvathipuram is one of the main points in the divisional railway’s to-do list, then the remaining many points focus on improving the passengers’ safety and comfort at the stations. Improving train efficiency by tracking speed of service, arrival and departure times and the like is also a major target with the railways this year.

The particular division consisting of Trivandrum Central and Ernakulam Junction topped the charts in terms of passenger density and earnings, this year. The income has already increased close to 10% making it approximately Rupees 340 crores just in the last 6 months.
