Alleged leakage of taped phone calls: Ratan Tata moves Supreme Court.

Ratan Tata, India’s leading industrialist and Chairman of Tata group, approached the Supreme Court today for filing an appeal for further action on the illegal leakage of the phone calls taped by the Tax department, as a part of the 2G scam investigation. The phone calls include his talks with corporate lobbyist Nira Radia.

As per Harish Salve, lawyer for Tata, the illegal leakage of the calls is against fundamental rights and privacy. His talks with Nira Radia are more personal and related with Vaishnavi Corporate Communications representing Tata group, in which Ms. Radia is the PR executive. That telephonic talk has nothing to do with the 2G scam investigation, says Tata. The government has the power to tape but not to publicize. Tata also requested to amend the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 dealing with phone call taping, and to ban the illegal publicity of phone calls taped for official purposes of the Government.

As per the CAG report the Govt. of India has collected 123.5 billion rupees in the sale of 2G spectrum services to telecom firms.

Some of the journals detailed the taped phone calls and there are mp3 versions of the phone calls in some websites which also include other telephonic talks of Nira Radia with media persons like Barkha Dutt and some prominent industrialists and politicians.
