A Science City for Kerala State
The State Government decided to open a Science City in Kainoor, a village in the Puthoor Panchayath of Thrissur. The recommendation for the Science City was introduced during the minister-level meeting today. The Government will hand over 30 acres of land to the Department of Higher Education for building a Science City, says the Chief Minister.
As per the Central Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Science City conceptualizes a Science Centre. A Science City is designed to be financially self-sustainable and will concentrate on the domain of Science and Technology.
The main objective of a Science City is to disseminate the popularity of science and technology to all the levels of society and to stimulate scientific curiosity and creativity among students. In essence, a Science City should be luxurious and entertain the visitors with its amusement facilities. There are expected to be galleries, museums and outdoor parks all related to science, within the limits of a Science City. The capital cost will be shared between State and Center in a one-is-to-one ratio.
The Science City of Kolkata is the first one of its kind in India which opened its doors to the public in 1997. India already has major science cities in its league, examples being the Science Cities located in states like West Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
