Around 12,000 teaching vacancies will be available in the schools of the state following the new Right to Education law that is coming to practice. The new vacancies will be created in class 1 to class 8 in most schools.

The vacancies come as a burst of relief to almost 7000 teachers in the state who stand to lose their jobs as the government has increased the age bar for entry into 1st division has been increased to 6 years. Currently in the state almost 3.15 lakh students enter the 1st division on a regular basis. Following the raising of the age bar, this number is expected to drop by half.

According to the commission led by Lida Jacob, all schools should try to settle on a teacher- student ratio of 1:30 for the lower primary section and 1:35 for the upper primary sections in the state. According to the Center’s Right to Education act, the ratio is 1 full time teacher and a part-time teacher for every 100 students in the school.

According to the Lida Jacob commission, a class of 40 – 60 students needs to appoint two teachers. The principal of the school and the class teachers are not included in the numbers. The schools are allowed to admit up tp 35 students in a single division, but for 36 – 70 students an additional class needs to be formed.
