Kapil Sibal is new minister for Communications and Information Technology
In an effort to restore the disrupted parliamentary proceedings to normalcy, the Government has handed over the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to the charge of Kapil Sibal. Kapil Sibal was asked to take over the Ministry following the resignation of A. Raja from the post after his involvement in the widely publicized 2G spectrum scandal was proven beyond a doubt.
The DMK who had so far been supportive in their attitude towards Information Technology minister Raja, chose to keep silent when the Government announced Kapil Sibal as taking over the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Originally being the Minister of the Human Resource Development wing, Kapil Sibal will now handle two additional responsibilities, the ministry of Communications and Information Technology and also the Ministries of Science and Technology, Earth Sciences. Prithviraj Chauhan, the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra was earlier handling the Ministry of Science and Technology. After his move to Chief Ministership, the Ministry of Science and Technology was placed under the charge of Kapil Sibal.
The Government makes the move to bring on Kapil Sibal as the new Communications and Information Technology minister with the view that this might serve to pacify the havoc caused in the parliament by the 2G scandal, and the hope that Sibal’s taking over as Information Technology minister can serve to bring back decorum in the house. Even in spite of Raja’s resignation, the opposition had not allowed the regular parliamentary sessions to resume on Monday. It is being expected that Kapil Sibal’s impeccable record of service may serve to tranquilize the mayhem that has been persistent over the weeks, ever since erstwhile Information Technology minister Raja had emerged responsible in the 2G spectrum scandal.
Lok Sabha leader, Pranab Mukherjee has proposed a lunch session between the ruling and opposition parties where mutually agreeable terms can be arrived at, with respect to organizing a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate the 2G spectrum scandal.
