Wayanad wildlife sanctuary: 30 years of struggle and finally hope for farmers
The long enduring struggle for survival for the people in the farming communities living inside Wayanad Wild life Sanctuary since 1980 has eventually come to a close with the allocation of Rs 5.5 crore for implementing the first phase of rehabilitation.
A total of 10,604 people residing in 110 settlements currently are going to be relocated within 15 days after receiving the complete details of the allotment, the sources said. The delayed decision is finally the outcome of the Central Ministry of Environment and Minister of Forests for rehabilitating all the trapped farming communities including the tribesmen.
The people residing in the settlement are offered two packages- payment of Rs 10 lakh to each family or complete relocation by the Forest Department.
The rehabilitation programme would be implemented as per the village relocation plan from Core and Critical Habitats of National Tiger Conservation Authority under the ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests with the financial aid provide by NTCA.
With the completion of the entire rehabilitation process, about 3,300 acres of land would be added to the land resources of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
