New fashions in gold jewelry become popular among Malayalees
Gold is making a re-entry into the fashion market and has become a current fascination of youngsters, especially in Kerala. Its growing investment value and classic, undying elegance are two main reasons why gold is back in business. But contrary to the traditional approach to jewelry purchase, today’s customers are experimenting more with gold designs and are inclined to purchase non-Indian designs in jewelry as a rule.
In gold jewelry, what is gaining popularity these days are the Islamic
jewelry collections. Karachi, Ankara and Bahraini designs are much coveted. The Pakistani gold design is quite a favorite among the young brides this year. Italian designs are also hot favorites. In local trends, Malayalees seem to have developed a growing fascination with Rajasthani jewelry and the related Kundan work.
Multi-colored jewelry is also popular among the youngsters. This jewelry comes in a range of colors or shades which are incorporated into the gold design using enamel work. Some jewelry stores even have special collections for teens specializing in sporty and trendy light-weight designs.
Intricately carved bangles are often preferred and word of the year is ‘single piece’. A thick gold band with complex designs and embedded with small stones is often bought instead of the ‘set’ bangles which are much thinner and worn in a group.
Among earrings, the new avatar of the traditional ‘Jimukki’, fondly referred to as the ‘Kuda-jimukki’ by the gold professionals is the last word. Ornate with a variety of stones or pearls, the ‘Kuda-jimukki’ is beautiful to look at, goes with both sarees and salwars and is even known to be a conversation starter at parties.
Anything light-weight is the norm of the day and even for their weddings, brides are known to choose the kind of jewelry that they can use later on a daily basis. Stones are also becoming increasingly popular and while the authentic pearls, diamonds, emeralds and rubies are still loved by the natives, the fashion is to buy one of those lack-luster antique gold designs with semi-precious or non-precious stones.
