Kerala weddings: Wedding bells are ringing!

Bookmark and Share

Wedding bells are ringing and it’s time for sprucing up. For the groom and of course the bride, their wedding day undoubtedly is special. Not simply because they are the cynosure of all eyes on that day, but more because their life will never be the same. Buoyed by hype as well as hope, it is only natural that they start overhauling their body much in anticipation.

The tying of the nuptial knot is no more in the hallowed precincts of the temple or in the warmth of the traditional homes. Splendor of starred hotels, extravagant wedding halls, shimmering restaurant rooftops, beaches swooned by the soft rhythms of the lapping waves are now the favorites. Those with too much green to spare, coupled with a spirit of adventure have started exploring the sky and the deep sea. Of course, have no doubts, the pomp is determined by the pelf, the bulge of your wallet. It has transcended the limits of simplicity as professionals, products from mega business schools, tax their brains out to make the wedding ceremony a public mega event.

The rituals, gods thank, remain traditional, but the make-up of the thespians in this multi-million reality show has undergone a sea change. Now, many of the youngsters go for lacha, lehenga, ghagra and gown at least for reception and mehendi. Though Kancheepuram and Banares silks are still the uncrowned queens among the bridal sarees, party wear sarees with beads and embroidery are the favorite for mehendi and reception.

Hindu brides normally go for iridescent colors, though Christians prefer long flowing white or off white gowns with matching veil and bouquet. In Kerala, the groom has long forsaken the traditional mundu and shirt and looks more confident in Sherwani. All said and done, the bridal makeup is the prerogative of the beautician assigned to transform a mundane to an ethereal beauty.

When it comes to jewels and jewelry there are those with a yen for tradition who prefer to be decked with heavy age old temple jewelry. But the affluent, the neo rich, is simply not mesmerized by the yellow metal .They would rather go for platinum, or diamonds to beef up their status. Even the middle class, who often find it difficult to make the both ends meet, has joined this league in splurging on glitters and luxuries.

Marriage, today, is just not the marriage of true minds. It is s a marriage of glitz, glamour, pomp and pelf. Bride and groom appearing in the attires created by international designers are also in vogue. Now, catch your breath, the entire event can be broadcasted live across the world with many of the internet providers facilitating its smooth flow.

Now, family members relax as the D-day approaches. For, everything from flowers to feast has been entrusted to event management groups. It is their headache to see that the event is one mega success. And they leave no stone unturned in their bid to make it memorable as for them it is a question of survival in this tough market. One wrong move and they are in the dumps for no one would in their life time forgive some one who spoiled their wedding day.

Feasts which are the mainstay of any wedding have also transformed. The customers now prefer international cuisine like Mexican and Thai for Indian weddings. But some in Kerala are still rooted and go for a traditional feast. If in the yonder days mellifluous voice of native singers swayed the guests today, the DJs have taken over the reins to spice up the event. Weddings have, definitely, become trendy. If you are planning one, catch up with the trends lest you be outmoded.
