World Cinema to Classic stature at the IFFK: “Domaine”, well-received

By  Keerthy Ramachandran

The World Cinema package at the 15th IFFK has an elegant journey travelling across numerous classic clicks that are widely lauded by the cineastes, here. A major share of the films from this category are termed real “classics” by not just the jurists and the cine laureates, but most surprisingly the average film lovers. One such film that was screened at the Sree Padmanabha was a film from France-Austria origin, “Domaine” (2009).

Domaine is a French film that is directed by Patric Chicha. The film that had won numerous accolades worldwide like from the Venice IFF, Bordeaux, Sau Paulo, Vendome etc was received well at the IFFK too.

The film takes a toll from its central character, Nadia, who is a wounded soul and is dependent on alcohol and a young boy, Pierre. Nadia is a mathematician by profession and is in her forties. While Pierre, a teen of seventeen, is enamoured and their rapport swings between the friendly, ambiguous and the amorous. The life Pierre watches through his eyes is fascinating and he would like to draw her away from the decline. The director cultivates the ambiguity of the relationship of these two characters with almost mystical musty distance which avoids the gratuitous provocation and solicitation.
