Screening of “Danny”, the only Indian cinema since 2001 to be the best feature film at IFFK

By  Keerthy Ramachandran

The retrospective session of T.V.Chandran, today screened one of the best ever classics of the International Film Festival of Kerala. The film since 2001 until now is the only Indian cinema to have won the best feature film award at the IFFK, “Danny”. As T.V.Chandran spoke to the audience before the screening of the film, he said that amongst the seven films personally included by him in the retrospective, he would consider “Danny” to be the best amongst all of them.

The movie is an exploration of the legendary actor Mamootty. His easeful style of master class acting in “Danny” is a whole textbook of the art of naturalised acting.

“Danny” is the story of a man who lives a lonely life on the seashore. He makes a living playing the guitar and sings at funerals. Father Simon gives him a saxophone, and Danny joins the church choir. Soon he marries a lady, Clara. Life moves smoothly with Clara until she deserts him. Later, he marries Margaret who demands that he own up her illegitimate son Robert’s parentage. He is an inconvenience, and therefore is lodged in a home in the hills. He develops a warm relationship with Bhargavi. But, that is a bonding that does not fit under any label. When he goes to his daughter, she refuses to entertain the couple. Bhargavi’s response to Danny’s demise sublimates the climax of the film. He who sacrificed his life for the desires and happiness of lots of women is eventually betrayed by all of them, but his mortal body after his death finds solace in the mercy of a lady who was barely known to him throughout his lifetime.

Any curiosity aroused in anybody as to how T.V.Chandran stands as a legend in Malayalam film industry, just watch “Danny”. With this film, the last screening at T.V.Chandran retrospective will be over.
