Malayalam Cinema triumphs again, great feedback for Elektra

By  Shan

Elektra, the Shyama Prasad film screened as part of the ‘Malayalam cinema now’ in the 15th edition of IFFK captured the audience with the depth of its theme and unique directorial treatment. The film was a cinematic presentation of Greek tragedy.

The story revolves around the life of Amaram family who carries a long heritage involving killings and reciprocals. The father of the family, the role played by Prakash Raj dies under mysterious circumstances. Both the wife and the daughter began to pet blame on each other for his death. The role of Elektra, the daughter and Diasy the mother is played by Nayanthara and Maneesha Koirala respectively. The tug of war between them aggravates as Elektra’s brother returns.

He being close to the mother turns against his sister. Finally they come to know that their mother had an affair with Isaac, the son of Abraham who was earlier banished from the ancestral home. Both the children together murders Isaac. The mother finally succumbs to the shock caused by Isaac’s death and she commits suicide. The agony of the boy perpetuates and soon he also commits suicide. The film works on the concept of Elektra complex. The love, hatred, revenge, contempt, betrayal and suspicion play their own part in the story. When you start loving someone you start losing some other one. This is the essence of the story.
The cinematography , sound track and excellent scenery adds vigour to the film. The film feeds on the viewers’ psyche. The film can undoubtedly be termed as the most discussed film on the 4th day of IFFK.
