Fassbinder Retrospective: A legend enlivened


Retrospective film section of IFFK will be a homage to the great rebel of new German cinema, Rainer Warner Fassbinder. His seven popular films will be screened in the category. Warner Fassbinder, the promising progeny of new German cinema was born in Boveria, just three weeks after the city succumbed to the allied forces.

Portrayal of violence, human pathos and an unbridled hatred towards state organized oppression were the outcome of his life in the chaotic post war Germany. His entry to the glittering world of cinema started at an early age watching films. His liberal and unconventional approach life, sexuality and politics had a big impact on his films.

The retrospective section will showcase the most distinguished films like Chinese Rowlett, Despair- a journey in to the light, Gods of the plague, Katzel macher, Lilly Marleen and Love is colder than death. Katzel macher was his first well conceived film which had won five awards in Mannheim festival.

The creations of Fassbinder were an orchestrated struggle against the main stream thought process. These deviations of Fassbinder made him a cult figure in the film world.
Fassbinder had a premature death at the age of 37.But his popularity and expertise has transgressed generations. The retrospective section will provide a great arena for the film viewers to get acquainted with this great director, the “enfant terrible man of new German cinema”
