JUSTICE K.K. USHA
Smt.Justice.K.K.Usha was born
on 3-7-1939 in Thrissur as daughter of late K.K.Kumaran and Mrs.
Leela Kumaran. She had her school education in Government Girls
Education, Ernakulam, graduated from Maharajas' College, Ernakulam,
in Science, took B.L.Degree from Government Law College, Ernakulam.
She is married to
Sri.K.Sukumaran, Advocate (as he then was) in 1961. Mr.K.Sukumaran
was elevated as a Judge of the Kerala High Court in 1981 and later a
judge of the Bombay High Court from 1991 till his retirement in
1992.
The couple has got two
daughters, both are married. The eldest daughter is doing her
research work in U.S.A. and the youngest daughter is a Lawyer.
Her Lordship enrolled an
Advocate in the year 1961 and practiced in the High Court of Kerala,
civil courts, Tax Tribunals and Supreme Court of India. She was
appointed as Government Pleader in the High Court of Kerala in 1979.
She was a successful lawyer in the High Court, Supreme Court of India
and in civil courts and tribunals on cases arising under
Constitutional law, civil law, Taxation and special statutes.
She represented India in
1975, in the 18th International Convention of International
Federation of Women Lawyers at Hamburg. Represented India in the
Joint Seminar on "Convention on the elimination of all forms of
discrimination as regards women" organised by International
Federation of Women Lawyers and International Federation of Women of
Legal Careers (both organisations having the status of
non-governmental organisation in the United Nations) under the
auspices of U.N.O. In the committee constituted at the convention to
consider the special circumstances of the women in Asian-Afro
countries, elected as the co-ordinator of Asian countries. Her
lordship also attended the International Conference of the Women
Judges in Newzealand in September 1993.
She was member of the
Executive Committee of the Kerala Bar Federation and a founder member
of the Kerala Branch of India Federation of women lawyers, and
occupied the position of its Secretary and President of the India
Federation of Women Lawyers. Was a member and President, of
University Women's Association, an organisation affiliated to the
International Association of University Women, member of various
other women's organisations. From 1983 till March 1991 functioned as
the Secretary of Sree Narayana Sevika Samajam, a charitable
organisation running home for girls and home for destitute women in
Sree Narayana Giri, Aluva.
She elevated as a Judge of
the Kerala High Court on 25-3-1991.Kerala was the first to have a
lady judge in the High Courts of India, or elsewhere by appointment
of Justice Mrs.Anna Chandy who was followed by Kumari Janaki Amma and
Kumari Justice Fathima Beevi, who became the judge of the Supreme
Court of India. Mrs.Justice.K.K.Usha is the first lady to be
appointed in Kerala High Court from Bar. Justice K.Sukumaran and
Justice K.K.Usha are the first couple in India to be judges of the
High Court.
Her Lordship is now a member
of the Advisory Board constituted under the COFEPOSA and the
Chairperson of the Advisory Board under the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Act.
Her lordship is the Chairman
of the Committee in Charge of the Family Courts in Kerala and also
the Judge in administrative charge of Thiruvanthapuram District
subordinate judiciary.
